Where does my child need extra help? As a parent, it is essential for you to know if your child is experiencing difficulties or delays in one or more subjects. This question forces teachers to address an uncomfortable topic: areas where your child is lagging behind. Ultimately, you are your child's advocate, and understanding his/her weaknesses can help you correct the situation. 2. Does my child complete his/her homework? You may think your child is turning in his/her homework every day, but are you 100 percent sure that's the case? The supervisor who conducts the interview will also be the one overseeing your daily work progress and offering feedback on your performance. He seems cool, even nice to work with. So, you’re excited and your experience starts out great. Then, three weeks into it, you realize your new boss isn’t exactly your idea of what a boss should be. He isn’t reliable or fair, forgets important things about projects, and generally gives poor supervision. Suddenly, you have an overwhelming what-the-heck-did-I-get-myself-into situation on your hands (Think “Horrible Bosses”). If it’s any comfort, you aren’t the only one who has to deal with an unreliable or downright terrible boss. Bad bosses exist at every level of every organization. Whether you’re an intern, part-time or full-time employee, or a veteran of the work world, you will encounter a not-so-great supervisor at one point or another in your career. It’s better to know how to deal with one now than trying to navigate that icky situation later. It is important to know that being able to rely on your supervisor is crucial to your success as an intern. This doesn’t give you permission to not do your job or voice your opinion when you see a problem or a better way to go about doing something. But reliability means you can count on your supervisor to be there for you, guide you through this new phase of your life, and provide feedback to help you improve. As an intern, your perception of the reliability of your supervisor will affect your performance. So, here are some ways to deal with unreliable internship supervisors. Be on time or ahead of time on everything When you’re motivated to learn and get lots of stuff done in a reasonably short span of time, dealing with unreliable supervisors can be frustrating. One way to counter this is to be on time or ahead of time about projects you are given as much as possible. Try to anticipate things that need to be done and if it is in your power to do them, by all means, get them done. Be an example of reliability It’s a bit hard to expect reliability in others if you aren’t reliable yourself. It’s like standing in a glass house and throwing stones. For whatever reason your supervisor is disorganized poor time management skills, too many things on his plate, or just out of sync with his responsibilities if you can be depended on to get things done and keep your word, your supervisor will recognize that and want to engage you on more projects even if he doesn’t understand the reason. Develop your own personal power As an intern, you don’t have the positional power to tell your supervisor what to do, or in many cases, give them the ’suggestion as command’ kind of talk. What you do have is the opportunity to develop your own personal power. This means you can take this opportunity to increase your competence, strength, and confidence that will give you the courage to help change the situation or at least open up the door for the  realization that a problem exists. Try to help wherever and whenever you can It is very important that you don’t try to force or coerce someone to change through shame, guilt, or some other emotion. Doing this could damage your relationship with your supervisor and hinder you from getting that much-needed reference letter for a real job. Instead, offer to help when you see your supervisor has gotten behind or is otherwise disorganized. Be polite, respectful, and energetic while being assertive about moving a  project forward whether they deliver on their part or not. Set a default into requests you make of your supervisor This can be a bit difficult since you’re supposed to be learning and the supervisor is for the most part supposed to be giving feedback and making the decisions. However, if your supervisor isn’t doing that, be sure to set a default into every request. This means even if they don’t respond to your email within 48 hours or they don’t get you necessary information or documents to finish your job, you can still get your work done effectively and efficiently. Talk it out Some supervisors have been unreliable for so long that they probably don’t even realize it. Still, others are very good at something else in their personal or professional lives, that no one will dare call them out on their unreliability. But if your supervisor can’t be depended on, try to let them know how you feel about it and/or how it is affecting you by asking for a brief meeting to talk about it. And if you’re granted such a meeting, be respectful. Lay out your concerns, but don’t be condescending or judgmental.

After all, you don’t want to unknowingly offend anyone or get yourself into a sticky situation. Every country, including Italy, has its fair share of unique customs. Below are 30 Italian customs and etiquette tips you need to know before packing your bags and heading abroad. When you’re first introduced to an Italian native, it’s best to say “buongiorno” rather than “ciao,” as the latter is used only amongst close friends and the younger generation. After lunch around 1:00 p.m., it’s customary to say “buonasera” or “good evening”. When meeting a new person, you should shake his or her hand. Only greet someone with a kiss on either side of the cheek if you’re friends. Be sure to maintain eye contact while speaking, or else Italians may think that you’re trying to hide something. When starting a conversation with someone in Italy, abandon the idea of getting right to the point, whether you’re speaking in Italian or English. Guitar teacher Ben M. shares how you can use the settings already on your electric guitar to drastically improve your sound When it comes to the electric guitar, players can be relentlessly dedicated to achieving the perfect guitar tone. Guitar tone (also called guitar sound) is most simply defined as the sound your guitar produces. Guitar tone can be compared to a painting; it is a masterpiece that results from blending different colors together. In this case your colors are bass, treble, mids, your amplifier, and any effects a guitarist may use. Guitarists pride themselves on their tone because it is what sets them apart as an artist and gives them their own unique sound. But don’t be fooled by this brief definition, guitar players can spend countless hours, days, and even weeks carefully sculpting their ideal tone. However, the good news is that guitar tone is in fact 100% personal and every player, no matter how experienced, has the ability to dial in great guitar tone without spending a fortune on fancy gear (though it is important to have the essentials). This article focuses on simple ways to improve your tone by simply using  all the built-in features your electric guitar already has. First Steps  to Improve Your Guitar Tone When beginning to work on improving your tone it is important to ask yourself a few basic questions: What aspects of my current tone do I like? What aspects do I dislike? (too dark, too bright, etc) Based on my playing style and genre, what aspects of my playing do I want to highlight in my tone (for example: sparkling chords, thick power chords, or clear solo bends) After analyzing what you’ve discovered, set a goal. Maybe you are trying to imitate your favorite guitar idol’s tone or want to focus on creating your own sound. Regardless of what your goal is, an important thing to keep in mind (especially for beginners) is to always start with what you have. How to Use Your Guitar Tone Settings While many players may rush to their local music store and walk out with a handful of effects pedals or even a new amp, most players tend to forget one of the most basic aspects of their guitar’s anatomy; the pickup selector switch and the tone and volume control knobs. Below is a quick breakdown of an electric guitar’s tone settings: Pickup Selector Switch Selects which pickup is active on your guitar. Most guitars have three  switch positions; some guitars like Fender Stratocasters have five. Bridge Pickup (farthest down): bright, sparkling sound, lots of treble Middle Position: warm and shimmery sound, high mids Neck Pickup (farthest up): full and rounded sound, more bass Volume Control Controls the master volume of your guitar, or the amount of signal that will come out of your amplifier. Tone Control Controls the brightness or darkness of your guitar’s sound by adding or reducing the amount of bass/treble in the signal. Bass = darker tone with lots of low end. Treble = brighter tone with lots of high end and sparkle. How to Adjust Your Guitar Knobs for Better Guitar Tone Now that we have established the basics, let’s focus on learning how to use the guitar  knobs. Players of all levels continue to leave their controls dialed up to 10 all the time, restricting them from loads of undiscovered tone possibilities. To make a comparison, that’s like buying a sports car and only driving it only in first gear. A simple concept that can really help develop a guitar player’s control over their tone is getting into the habit of setting your tones with the volume and tone controls below their maximum levels. When you dial in your tone with the knobs at 10, you have limited adjustment options. Only being able to turn down the knobs will typically make your sound muddy. By giving the controls room to expand, you have an array of possibilities if your tone needs adjusting. Below are common ways to use your guitar controls and bring up your guitar playing IQ. Guitar  Knob Techniques Basic Boost: The volume knob can act as a boost which can take your guitar from clean sounds for rhythm playing to dirty overdrive tones for soloing. When playing a song keep your volume knob at 6 or 7 when playing chords or verse parts and when it’s time to deliver a rockin’ solo roll up the volume to 10 and you will not only hear a boost of gain (overdrive) but also a volume lift over any other instruments in the song. Signal Clean Up: Perhaps your tone is too distorted and you want to reduce the harshness and clean up the signal without changing your amp/effects settings. Simply roll off the volume knob on your guitar a bit and the signal will clean up rather effectively. Buzz Killer: How many players have cringed at the level of buzz coming out of your amp? Guitar buzz is commonly caused by poor grounding in your guitar’s electronics and usually requires repairing. But as a quick fix, turning down the volume knob until the hum is quelled can make your guitar sound more pleasing to the ear. Set Polisher: If you are in a band, always turn the volume knob down while on stage in between songs to avoid buzz. This makes your set seem much more polished and professional. Volume Sweller: A more advanced technique with the volume knob is called swelling. Play a chord or note with the volume knob off and gently roll it back (many players use their pinky on the side of the knob) to let the sound pass through again. Experiment rolling up the knob fast or slow and see what happens. This takes practice but can produce awesome sounds when used while playing. Guitar Tone Control Techniques Tone Warmer: Keeping the tone knob around 9 or 10 is best for warm tones like Led Zeppelin or Jimi Hendrix type sounds. This means the guitar signal has lots of treble making the high ends of the signal sparkle. Tone Darkening: Roll back the tone knob for darker sounding tones like Sunshine of Your Love by Cream or the wholesome solo tone from American Woman by The Guess Who. This setting brings out the bass or low end in the signal. Onboard Wah-Wah: A more advanced tip with tone control is using the tone knob as an onboard wah-wah effect. In essence a wah-wah pedal is just a giant tone control adding treble when pressed down and adding bass when pulled back. You can emulate this effect by playing a chord or note and twisting the tone control rapidly, or slowly, from its maximum level to minimum level (much like volume swelling.) This requires practice and technique but you can get great wah-wah sounds without buying the pedal itself. After reading this article, hopefully you can understand why improving your guitar tone is vital to developing as a player and that there are endless sonic possibilities at your disposal already. Experiment with some of the techniques from this article and find what kind of sounds are most pleasing to your ear. Find your inspiration Look into your own life, your surroundings, and people that you look up to in order to find your muse for writing lyrics. Find a subject you are passionate about, whether its set to a  love ballad or an uptempo dance song. Think about what kind of music really speaks to you, and what other listeners will  relate to. I encourage you to listen to other artists and different genres of music, but stay true to  yourself and be original! Never copy another singer-songwriters style or lyrics. 2. Write everything down Once you have found your inspiration, keep some sort of journal. You never know when lyrics may come to you   you  could be on the subway, at a park, or in school, and you don’t want to forget what comes to you! Also, I suggest having some type of recording software to record what comes to you, such as with the voice memos  on your cell phone, or with  GarageBand on your  computer.  If you keep singing a  chorus or melody line over and over your head, record it as soon as you can so you don’t lose it! 3. Shape your song Now it’s time to start crafting your song! Most  successful songs have 2-3 verses and 2-3 choruses. Anything less or more  than that may be a challenge. Make sure there is a story in your song, and that you have some sort of point coming across. What do you want people to feel and think when they hear  your songs? While there is no absolute right way to write a song, many people start out with writing meaningful lyrics, and then putting chords or melody to the words. Or you can do it the other way around, writing a beautiful melody and chord progression, and coming up with the lyrics last. Either of these approaches is acceptable. Refining Your Songwriting 4. Test your songs out live So, you think you have your song completed and ready to put out there? I suggest performing your song live at an open mic or a talent show to get all the kinks out, and to see how an audience reacts to it. Or you may want to start out simple by playing it for your friends and family, since performing original material in front of a live audience can be nerve-wracking! 5. Try recording your song After you’ve been performing the song for a few months, it’s time to record your song! First,  decide if you want to book a session in a recording studio or take a stab at recording in a home studio with the equipment you have. With technology today, it’s easy to record your own songs with the right computer software and a quality microphone. Having a recording of your song, even if it is just a demo, will open many doors, especially if you want to become a singer-songwriter for your career. Of course, make sure you discuss splitting any profits 50/50 or come to an agreement in writing if you plan to distribute your music professionally. 7. Copyright your music Getting a copyright for  your music is crucial as a songwriter, and should not be overlooked! I recommend registering your song as soon as you have the final version  of it written and recorded. You can do so easily online here at the U.S Copyright Office. For a small fee you can register any songs that you have written, by submitting lyrics and a recording of your work of art (can be a demo). Once you have paid the fee and submitted your original materials, you then  own the copyright to your song, and no one can use it without your permission. If you dont register  your works with the U.S Copyright Office, someone could steal your lyrics or your melody line, and make a whole new recording without your permission or having to pay you any royalties. 8. Look into Performing Rights Organizations Once you have submitted your works to the U.S Copyright Office, I recommend joining  a Performing Rights Organization (PRO). ASCAP, SESAC,  and BMI are organizations  that will  collect any monetary royalties on your behalf and distribute them to you in a fair and organized way. You may be earning royalties if you have songs on the radio, TV, YouTube, Spotify, or iTunes. Each time your song plays in a public place you are entitled to royalties. Some PROs are free to join while others have a joining fee, so do your research to see what’s best for you. 9. Consider writing for others Being a songwriter doesn’t mean you have to write songs just for yourself. Some of  the best singers in the world prefer to write songs for others. This could mean writing a song for the opposite gender, a song in a different language  or  a different genre, or a song that is  too high or low for your vocal range. It’s perfectly normal to be a songwriter for other artists: Lady Gaga, Sia, and Bruno Mars all started out this way! 10. Pitch your music Once you are confident in  your original song, it’s time to pitch your music to the industry! This is not easy and won’t happen overnight, but with technology today, you do have an advantage of getting your music heard and seen by important music industry professionals. One way is by submitting your music online to a music catalog. Many TV shows and commercial companies will look through these production libraries to find songs for their needs, and yours could be exactly what  they are looking for! Do your research with these, as some have fees associated with signing up, while others are free. In major cities, there are also major networking events where artists  can  pitch their songs in person to companies like  MTV and VH1 for a small fee. New York City’s “Spony” is a great opportunity for this. Being a singer-songwriter myself  (Ive  produced my own original songs and written jingles for companies), I hope that these strategies will help you create your songs and bring  them to life for yourself and others to hear!
